In the southern part of the 300 km long Tuscan coast, between Follonica and the unique lagoon landscape of the Monte Argentario peninsula, there are some enchanting sandy beaches. Only 22 km from the provincial capital Grosseto is one of the most beautiful seaside resorts on the Maremma coast: Castiglione della Pescaia. Further south, Orbetello is geographically exceptional, situated on a narrow headland in the middle of two lagoons. To the north is the Laguna di Ponente with the Tombolo della Giannella, and south of Orbetello is the Laguna di Levante, with the beautiful sand dune of the Tombolo della Feniglia, a kilometer-long protected natural beach. The lagoon city is reminiscent of a ship's hull with its unique shape and is connected to Monte Argentario by a dam artificially built in 1841. Another natural beach section is the “Parco Naturale della Maremma” (colloquially also called Parco dell'Uccellina). It is a nature reserve that extends over an area of approximately 9800 hectares along the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea between the towns of Principina a Mare, Alberese in the east and Talamone in the south. This area forms a largely intact ecosystem.
