First edition of the Terre di Pisa Bike Trail: first stage through Terricciola 

An exciting discovery tour through the treasures of the province of Pisa and the wine town of Terricciola

From 9 to 13 October 2024, the first edition of the **Terre di Pisa Bike Trail** took place - a unique cycling adventure that took cyclists from all over the world on a journey of discovery through the picturesque landscapes of the province of Pisa. Organised by the **Chamber of Commerce of North West Tuscany**, this non-competitive event offered an exciting opportunity to explore the region's hidden treasures on gravel roads, hill paths and through charming villages.

Passing through Terricciola

A highlight of this spectacular trail was the Passing through Terricciola, a picturesque village on the Strada del Vino, which is idyllically nestled in the rolling hills of the province of Pisa. Terricciola, known as the “Città del Vino”, offered cyclists not only breathtaking views of the surrounding vineyards, but also the opportunity to immerse themselves in the region’s wine tradition. Participants took the opportunity to taste local wines and be inspired by the warm hospitality of the winemakers. The mayor and an advisory board were personally on site and contributed to the special atmosphere.

 

 

Details of the 1st stage 

The **starting shot** was fired on October 9th, and the trail adventure spanned an impressive **535 km**. The route was divided into eight stages and passed through 16 different municipalities. With a total ascent of more than **9.900 meters of altitude**, the route represented a challenge that suited both gravel and MTB riders. The aim was to highlight the impressive beauty of the territory and to highlight the growing importance of cycle tourism in the region, an industry that has seen a remarkable resurgence since the pandemic.

The first stage took the cyclists from Pisa to Casciana Terme lari, with a stop in terricciolaHere, the participants were able to enjoy a well-deserved break in the shade of the picturesque vineyards and in the charming, historic streets of the village. This stage, with a climb of almost 900 meters, offered spectacular views and highlighted the harmonious connection between nature and tradition.

The Terre di Pisa Bike Trail was an **unsupported** experience where participants were completely autonomous in deciding when and where they wanted to finish their daily stages. Those who completed the entire trail within the five allotted days received the coveted finisher certificate.

With this event, the Chamber of North-West Tuscany intends to support **Cicloturism** as a significant driver of tourism development. According to a study by ISNART and Lega Ambiente, cycle tourism in Italy attracted over 2023 million visitors in 56 and generated a total economic benefit of more than **5,5 billion euros**.
After the successful completion of the first edition, the **Terre di Pisa Bike Trail** will become an annual event and the organizers have already announced that the dates for the 2025 edition will be announced soon.
Participants and spectators agreed: the Terre di Pisa Bike Trail not only presented sporting challenges, but also offered a unique opportunity to discover the impressive variety of landscapes, cultural treasures and culinary delights of the region. Terricciola was an unmissable highlight of this trip and enchanted the hearts of cyclists with its picturesque beauty and exquisite wines.
