The fragrance that belongs to Terricciola
The historic coffee roastery Incascaffé is reopening its doors after two years.
Wednesday used to be a special day in Terricciola. When the roasting took place at the small Incascaffé roastery on Via XX Settembre, the aroma of freshly roasted coffee wafted through the town. You didn't need to see the roastery; you simply knew what was happening there. For two years, that aroma was absent…
The historic coffee roastery has now reopened – and with it, a piece of history returns for many people. terricciola .
For two years the door remained closed. Two years without freshly roasted coffee in the small shop on Via XX Settembre. Two years in which something was missing that had long since become commonplace for many.
The Torrefazione is now open again.
And our long-time guests were delighted.
"Does it smell like coffee again today?"
Many customers of Toscana Forum and many guests of the holiday home "In Toscana" have been coming to Terricciola for decades. Some have known the place since their first Tuscan holiday, others have become regular guests over the years. For many, the Torrefazione (chimney) was simply an integral part of the experience.
The day of the coffee roasting remains particularly memorable. That unmistakable aroma hung over the place – warm, intense, slightly bitter, and yet seductive. You didn't even need to see the roastery. You simply knew: Today, coffee was being roasted.
And of course, we never went home empty-handed.
One or more packages of freshly roasted coffee always ended up in our suitcase and were later opened back in Germany. For several weeks or even months, it was a part of our morning breakfast, bringing back a little piece of our holiday.

Perhaps that's exactly what makes a cult store: you buy something there – and at the same time take a memory home with you.
A story that began in 1964
The history of the Torrefazione dates back to 1964.
Back then, it was run by Alessandro's father. Later, Alessandro himself took over the coffee roastery and continued to run it together with his wife, Giovanna. The Toscana Journal visited the couple several years ago and reported on the traditional coffee roastery in the heart of Terricciola, publishing a still-current article about it. Autumn holidays in Tuscany
For many guests, the small shop had long been an integral part of their stay.
Then the Torrefazione closed for about two years.
Now a new chapter begins: Valentina and Matteo have reopened the doors and are continuing to run the traditional establishment.
The original atmosphere is still clearly palpable. That's precisely what makes the visit so special.
From coffee bean to cup
Anyone visiting the Torrefazione today experiences the coffee first in a place where it looks completely different than it does later in the cup.
The new experience begins with a tour of the historic shop and the roastery's premises. In English, it is explained what happens to the coffee beans: from the From roasting to grinding to packaging.
You can see the individual work steps and get an insight into the production of the popular black elixir – right in the middle of a roastery where coffee was actually produced and sold for decades.
Afterwards, the guests are asked to take a seat in the village bar, where the coffee tasting will take place.
Look first, then taste
The tasting that follows will feature three different coffee varieties. Chocolate and cake will also be served.
Now you can try things out, compare them, and take your time.
The atmosphere is relaxed: not a quick espresso on the go, but a short coffee break with conversation and time to enjoy.
And perhaps afterwards one can understand a little better why the people of Terricciola missed their coffee for so long.
For me, this fragrance is a piece of home.
For me personally, the reopening is something special.
I grew up in Terricciola. The Torrefazione Incascaffé is one of the places of my childhood – and the smell of freshly roasted coffee is a memory that immediately comes back.
I, too, used to take my freshly roasted coffee from Terricciola with me to Munich. A pack in my luggage, a piece of home for later.
During the two years that the Torrefazione was closed, I was repeatedly asked by our guests:
"When will the coffee roastery finally reopen?"
Many of them had bought coffee there decades ago. They told me how much they missed the shop – and especially that very special aroma on roasting day.
Now there is finally an answer:
She's back.
And perhaps some long-time guests will pause briefly on their next Wednesday visit to Terricciola when the familiar scent wafts through the streets again.
Inhale.
And remember.
